What is OSTENIL® TENDON?

OSTENIL® TENDON is highly concentrated hyaluronic acid (2%). Hyaluronic acid is present in the body wherever moisture is stored or lubrication between layers of tissue is required to eliminate friction. Examples are the tear film, the mucous membranes of the body, the synovial fluid in the joints, and the skin.

The hyaluronic acid in OSTENIL® TENDON is produced by a non-animal based biotechnological process. The molecular structure closely mimics human hyaluronic acid, which is why OSTENIL® TENDON is well tolerated.

How does OSTENIL® TENDON work?

The lubricating characteristics of hyaluronic acid increase tendon gliding and reduce adhesions (stickiness). The tendon can work again as if well-oiled. Furthermore, hyaluronic acid:

  • blocks pain receptors
  • hinders inflammatory mediators
  • is a good transport medium for nutrients

OSTENIL® TENDON ensures a harmonisation of the tendons and the surrounding structures, reduces pain and increases joint function.

OSTENIL® TENDON helps to maintain tendon biomechanical properties

OSTENIL® TENDON contains a solution of hyaluronic acid (or: sodium hyaluronate) which has unique properties:

  • Acts as a lubricant when applied into the tendon sheath or peritendinously
  • Enhances the tendon gliding effect and reduces adhesion
  • Promotes tendon recovery and the wound healing process
  • Acts as a transport medium for nutrients to reach the avascular portions of the tendon
  • Masks the nociceptors and thus provides pain relief
  • Prevents the free passage of inflammatory cells and molecules through the tendon sheath due to its macromolecular meshwork

OSTENIL® TENDON promotes tendon gliding and the repair process

Which pathologies can be treated with OSTENIL® TENDON?

Many tendinopathies can be treated with OSTENIL® TENDON, including:

SHOULDER
Rotator cuff (supraspinatus) tendinopathy

Bicipital tendinopathy

ELBOW
Lateral epicondylalgia

Medial epicondylalgia

KNEE
Patellar tendinopathy

ANKLE and FOOT
Achilles tendinopathy

Posterior tibial tendinopathy
Peroneal tendinopathy

How to inject OSTENIL® TENDON

OSTENIL® TENDON is injected into the tendon sheath (intrasheath injection) or around the affected tendon (peritendinous injection) using a suitable needle (e.g. 25-27 g). Injection should be made at the site of most intense pain. Ultrasound guidance is recommended during injection.

There is an instructional DVD available upon request which shows how OSTENIL® TENDON is injected under ultrasound guidance:

OSTENIL® TENDON was developed with substantial co-operation of German orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, and is CE certified as a medical device.
